How to read this plants tier list

This Mutant Plants Base Defense plants tier list ranks keeper value for online wave defense under UPD-0.5, not collector flex. Rainbow Isle Base rewards identical-unit merges, Upgrade Zone floors, and smart fruit targets. A rare plant in the wrong lane with Damage rank 5 will still lose to a merged common that covers the leak.

Use this page with How to Merge Plants, Base Upgrades, and How to Survive Waves. Return to the Tier List Hub for mutations and fruit priority.

Ranking axes

  • Lane hold — stops fast leaks when Range is decent
  • Finish power — deletes tanky targets when Damage/Attack Speed are online
  • Merge friendliness — duplicates appear often enough to densify
  • Mutation upside — Void/Venom/Shadow payoffs are real on this body
  • Late flexibility — still useful when secret plants join the board

Secret plants can jump tiers when they land, but they are not free. Chase them with a budget via How to Get Secret Plants.

S-tier keepers (build around these roles)

S-tier means “protect merges and slots for this role once proven”:

  • Primary lane anchors — plants that consistently reduce fast leaks when Range ranks rise.
  • Sustained finishers — plants that convert Attack Speed and Venom-style mutations into kills after contact.
  • Cluster converters — plants that turn Frozen → Flame windows into wipes instead of chip damage.

If your board lacks an anchor, stop rolling for cosmetics and merge the best identical pair that holds a lane. Codes that fund this work: gem packs on Active Codes.

A-tier (strong with conditions)

A-tier plants shine when at least one condition is true:

  • You already have Damage/Range out of the danger zone (caps 20).
  • You can spare a fruit without emptying insurance Reversion stock.
  • The plant covers a second failure mode (for example soft DPS after you already fixed fast leaks).

A-tier is where most mid-game boards should live: two intentional lines, not ten unfinished experiments. Mutation pairing: Mutations Tier List.

B-tier (situational)

B-tier plants are fine early fillers or specialist answers:

  • Good while waiting for duplicates of an S/A line
  • Useful against a specific wave feel, then replaceable
  • Risky fruit targets because they may leave the board soon

Do not spend RELEASE2 Void packs or BUGFIX56954 Shadow packs on B-tier bodies. Fruit order: Fruits Priority. Definitions: Fruits.

C-tier and below (cut candidates)

Cut when:

  • They occupy Unit Slots without reducing any failure mode
  • They have no merge path in sight
  • They exist only because you panic-rolled

Unit Slots cap at 25, but capacity is not a reason to hoard trash. Raise slots after keepers exist, not before.

Role map instead of name worship

Because plant names and seasonal skins can shift after patches, this wiki ranks by role. After each Rainbow Isle Base update, re-test which of your owned plants currently occupy:

  1. Anchor
  2. Finisher
  3. Cluster converter
  4. Flex / temporary

Then merge and mutate inside that map. Patch habits: Patch Notes, context: UPD-0.5.

Sample mid-game board goal

  • 1–2 merged anchors
  • 1 finisher line with Attack Speed support
  • Grenade reserve intact (Flame/Frozen)
  • Fruits parked until anchors prove sticky
  • Luck only if roll starvation is the real bottleneck

Pre-run verification: Loadout Checklist. Gem plan: Gem Spending Planner.

Common tier-list misuse

  • Copying an endgame screenshot on hour one
  • Treating every secret as automatic S-tier regardless of placement
  • Ignoring Upgrade Zone while arguing about plant names
  • Mutating C-tier plants because fruits were burning a hole in the backpack
  • Using scripts to auto-roll without keeper criteria — read Scripts Hub

Rank plants by the leak they prevent and the merges they enable. Rarity is a modifier, not a moral victory — your wave count only cares whether the Brainrot line stopped moving.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What makes a plant S-tier in Mutant Plants Base Defense?

Consistent lane hold or finish power after merges, plus real mutation upside — not rarity alone.

Should I replace my whole board when I roll a secret?

No. Place and test it. Keep existing anchors until the secret proves it covers a failure mode better.

Do upgrades change plant tiers?

Yes in practice. Low Damage/Range makes every plant look worse. Fix Upgrade Zone floors first.

Which plants should get fruits?

Proven S/A keepers. Use Fruits Priority and Mutations Tier List before spending Void, Venom, Shadow, or Reversion.

How often should I reread this list?

After patches and whenever your failure mode changes. Roles matter more than memorized letter grades.
